The Antonio Ricaurte school, headquarters of Pies Descalzos in Quibdó, actively joined the national recognition of Afro-Colombianity.
Every May 21, the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the country is remembered. In other words, the FREEDOM OF THE AFRO PEOPLE, and their struggle to achieve it.
The activities that took place at all school sites consisted of choosing an African people to represent. For this, the students had to take into account the way they dress, dance, their songs and cultural expressions in general. They also had to prepare typical dishes from the Choco region such as: arroz atochado, bacalao, enyucados, among others. The children also presented a little of the history of each town, as well as its importance in the development of society.
During the development of the activities, attendees were able to observe and recognize a little of the history of Afro-Colombian hairstyles that are observed daily in the region; the importance of the yerba mate doctors for many inhabitants of the region was highlighted; it was also a space to learn about the dances and music such as the chirimía, representative of the Afro people. It also highlighted the importance of illustrious figures at the departmental level as the founder of the Technological University of Chocó "Diego Luis Córdoba", and of course also at the international level, such as Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Malcom X, among others, who have made a great contribution to the struggle and freedom of the Afro people.
