The Pies Descalzos Foundation, together with the Howard G. Buffett Foundation and the Ministry of National Education, announce that the construction of the new school in Tibú is entering its final stage.

The project, conceived as a Pedagogical, Ecological and Cultural Park, will become a learning and development space that will benefit more than 1,200 students per year and their families in this historically conflict-ridden region.

The school will have 34 classrooms, as well as physics and chemistry laboratories, a library, a bilingualism room, a technology room, a multipurpose room, a dining room, arts and music workshops, and multipurpose spaces. It will also have a large sports and recreational area with a soccer field, multi-purpose courts, a skating rink and children's playground. In total, more than 6,200m² have been built on a 30,000m² lot donated by Ecopetrol to the municipality.

The project will not only expand coverage and improve the quality of education in the municipality, but has also boosted the local economy by generating close to 160 direct and indirect jobs during construction. Once completed, the school will also function as a community development center, offering the population spaces for sports, cultural, artistic, environmental, and technological activities.

"We are about to deliver to Tibú an institution that will be a symbol of opportunities and hope. The school will be a place to learn, but also to build community and dream of a different future," said Patricia Sierra, executive director of the Pies Descalzos Foundation.

In Tibú, where more than 15,000 students are distributed in 153 schools, most of them in rural areas, this new school represents a decisive step towards strengthening school retention and guaranteeing a single school day with adequate spaces.

This project has been possible thanks to the joint work of the Pies Descalzos Foundation, the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, the Ministry of National Education, the Government of Norte de Santander and the Mayor's Office of Tibú, who have joined forces to close educational gaps and contribute to the sustainable development of Catatumbo.
